Northampton HKK Spring Seminar

With the weather taking a welcome turn for the better, the Northampton Higashi Karate seminar held on Saturday, 26th April took place outdoors, allowing students to train in the fresh air and sunshine. Practitioners were well-prepared for the conditions, sensibly equipped with sunscreen and sun hats for a safe and comfortable session.

The seminar delivered by Sensei Hurley focused on key technical elements found within partner-based practice including those of blocks and counters

Students also worked intensively on the correct application of Tobikomizuki and Tobikomi Nagashi Zuki, concentrating on weight shift and hip rotation during transition to achieve maximum striking effectiveness.

A significant portion of the day was also dedicated to Ohyo Kumite tailored to each student’s upcoming grading, with clear emphasis on timing, distance control, and the required fighting spirit (maai) essential for delivering effective and realistic partner work

The training concluded with Kata practice, covering Pinans 1–5, Kushanku, and Naihanchi, providing students with a well-rounded day of learning and refinement.

It was a highly enjoyable and rewarding day of Karate-Do, with students walking away equipped with new insights, improved skills, and a deeper appreciation of their practice.

Osu and well done to all who participated!
